Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa and its network operating under the commercial name Era GSM recorded an over seven-fold increase in the number of subscribers in 1997. The dynamics of that growth was bigger than in all the networks operating in Poland.

In PTK Centertel networks (NMT 450i / GSM 900 / GSM 1800) several services are available, including voice mail, data and fax transmission, Internet access, banking phone services, information services, short text messages (SMS), intelligent network services, cellular phone booths, ECG by phone, and roaming services through 140 operators across the world.

On the first of February 1996 the results of the tender for the construction of the Polish GSM networks were announced. Polkomtel S.A. won first place, receiving concession number 1 for providing telecommunications services as well as permission to construct a network of portable radio-telecommunications on the GSM standard in the 900MHz band with the area code of 601. The firm is owned by seven Polish firms (with a total of 61.5% of the shares) and two foreign ones (38.5%).
